Enhancing The Power

There are five methods a PowerUser may use to enhance the usage of Power: Expanding, Extending, Stretching, Adjusting, and Increasing. Each method is detailed below. A PowerUser may use one, two, three, four, or all five methods, provided s/he has the power available.

Expanding The Power

Power users can expand the effects of a spell. If a spell has an Area of Effect of a radius or # targets/level, then the casting power user can expand the effects by the same amount by spending a number of power points equal to ½ the power points (round up) of the original spell.

Example, a Dabbler casts the 4th level Find Buyer I spell which has an Area of Effect of 500 feet/lvl. Find Buyer I costs 4 PP to cast the spell. The Dabbler could increase the Area of Effect to 1000 ft/lvl by spending an additional 2 PP.

Each subsequent expansion after the first will cost the same amount of points. Continuing above example, the Dabbler could expand the spell to 1500 ft/lvl by spending an additional 2 PP (8 total). Another increase of 500 ft/lvl would cost another 2 PP. Etc.

In summation, using the above example, to cast the spell and expand it three times would cost 10 PP. The below table summarizes this cost. This represents the ability to cast the 4th level Find Buyer I spell with an Area of Effect of 2000ft/lvl.

PP Notes
4 spell (500 ft/lvl)
2 1st expansion (1000 ft/lvl)
2 2nd expansion (1500 ft/lvl)
2 3rd expansion (2000 ft/lvl)
10 total PP
et cetera

Extending The Power

Power users can extend the duration of spells. If a spell has a Duration other than C or P (i.e. - #rounds/level, #minutes/level, #hours/level, etc.), then the casting power user can extend the duration by the same amount by spending a number of power points equal to ½ the power points (round up) of the original spell.

For example, a Ranger casts the 2nd level Cold Resistance spell which has a duration of 1 min/lvl. Cold Resistance is a 2nd level spell, thus the Ranger had to spend 2 PP to cast the spell. The Ranger could increase the duration to 2 min/lvl by spending an additional 1 PP.

Each subsequent duration increase after the first will cost the same amount of points. Continuing above example, the Ranger could extend the spell to 3 min/lvl by spending an additional 1 PP (4 total). Another increase of 1 min/lvl would cost another 1 PP. Etc.

In summation, using the above example, to cast the spell and extend it three times would cost 5 PP. The below table summarizes this cost. This represents the ability to cast the 2nd level Cold Resistance spell with a duration of 4 min/lvl.

PP Notes
2 spell (1 min/lvl)
1 1st extension (2 min/lvl)
1 2nd extension (3 min/lvl)
1 3rd extension (4 min/lvl)
5 total PP
et cetera

Stretching The Power

Power users can stretch the range of a spell. If a spell has a Range other than "touch" or "self," then the casting power user can stretch the range by the same amount by spending a number of power points equal to ½ the power points (round up) of the original power used to cast the spell.

If the spell has a Range of touch, then the power user must pay an initial additional amount of power points equal to the spell's level ×½, round up, just to move it to a Range of 5ft/lvl. Additional stretchings are then handled as per below.

If the spell has a Range of self, then the power user must pay an initial additional amount of power points equal to the spell's level ×½, round up, just to move it to a Range of 5ft/lvl. Additional stretchings are then handled as per below.

Example, a Mentalist casts the 4th level Shock A spell which has a Range of 100 feet. Shock A is a 4th level spell, thus the Mentalist had to spend at least 4 PP to cast the spell. The Mentalist could increase the Range to 200 feet by spending an additional 2 PP.

Each subsequent range stretching, costs the same amount of PP. Continuing above example, the Mentalist could stretch the spell to 300 feet by spending an additional 2 PP (8 total). Another increase of 100 feet would cost another 2 PP. Etc.

In summation, using the above example, to cast the spell and stretch it three times would cost 10 PP. The below table summarizes this cost. This represents the ability to cast the 4th level Shock A spell with a range of 400 feet.

Just remember, stretching the power does not increase your ability to hit the target. In fact, the further you stretch the power, the more likely you are to miss the target (due to range penalties). However, it can also be quite unnerving to the target to be forced to dodge a Fire Ball shot from 500 feet away…

PP Notes
4 spell (100 feet)
2 1st stretch (200 feet)
2 2nd stretch (300 feet)
2 3rd stretch (400 feet)
10 total PP
et cetera

Adjusting The Power

WIP    from here down, need to complete (noted 20130417)

Power users can also make adjustments to any power. The table below summarizes the adjustments a power user may make to any power (spell).

This is still a work in progress and numbers may change.

Power Adjustments
Adjustment Cost 1
Each ×2 weight limit +50% PP
Each critical severity level increase +200% PP
Each +50% hits increase +25% PP (+50% PP)
Make power invisible +25% PP (+50% PP)
Make power detectable +100% PP (+200% PP)
Duration Changes
No duration2 to 1 round +25% PP
Concentration to 1rnd/lvl(C) +25% PP
Remove concentration requirement +50% PP
Duration Step Increase (this includes the "/lvl")
1 round +10% PP per Step
(+20% PP per Step)
1 minute
10 minutes
30 minutes
1 hour
1 day
5 days
10 days
30 days
100 days
1 year
10 years
100 years
1000 years
Permanent

1 — Cost is the additional percentage of PP Cost of the spell (round off). Parenthetical numbers are possible alternate percentage costs.
2 — Does not include instantaneous attack spells.

All above are additive. For example, to move a spell from "concentration" to "1rnd/lvl(C)" and to remove concentration requirement would equate to a cost = PP × 1.75, round up.

WIP    end note (noted 20130417)

Increasing The Power

Finally, and not the least, Power Users can increase any power. Any power user may increase the potency of any power usage by adding power points to any power cast. This increases the level the power is cast at up to the PowerUser's ranks in Power Employment skill.

For example, a 12th level PowerUser casts a Fireball I, a 7th level spell. The PowerUser has 14 ranks in Power Employment skill (she received specialized training during Apprenticeship). By adding 7 power points, the PowerUser can cast the Fireball I power as if it were a 14th level spell. Although the PowerUser is 12th level, she has 14 ranks in the employment skill, allowing her the ability to cast spells at up to 14th level.

No power user may cast a spell at a level greater than the number of ranks possessed in Power Employment skill. Continuing from above, the maximum level ANY power could be cast would be 14th level.

Increasing the effective level of a spell also increases the level at which it must be resisted. Continuing from above, although the PowerUser is 12th level and is casting a 7th level spell as if it were a 14th level spell, the level at which the spell is resisted is 14th level.
